What is FreeRADIUS?<\/h2>\n

FreeRADIUS is an authentification, authorization and accounting protocol.\u00a0 It was built in the dial-up era to manage users and keep track of the bandwidth usage by each connection for billing purposes. In this article, we will teach you how to install FreeRADIUS<\/p>\n

It is still a very strong tool to use even today. It is fast to set up and many networking programs like OpenVPN, SotfEther, Squid proxy and wifi managing tools can be integrated with FreeRADIUS.<\/p>\n\n

How to set up a RADIUS server?<\/h2>\n

There are two ways of setting up the FreeRADIUS server:<\/p>\n

1. The hard way: installing it via a putty terminal and manually configuring it and troubleshooting. This method usually takes about 30 minutes if you know what you’re doing, and several hours if you’re a newbie.<\/p>\n

2. The easy way: creating a new server instance and selecting the FreeRADIUS Ubuntu template from our DraculaServers.\u00a0 This takes about 1 minute and everything works straight out of the box. Method 2\u2014\u00a0<\/span>The Hard Way<\/h2>\n

Step 1 \u2014 Install FreeRADIUS 3 and FreeRADIUS modules<\/span><\/h3>\n
apt-get update\r\napt-get install freeradius freeradius-mysql freeradius-utils -y\r\n<\/pre>\n
Step 2 \u2014 Install php<\/span><\/h3>\n
apt-get install php-common php-gd php-curl php-mysql -y<\/pre>\n
Step 3 \u2014 MySQL Server<\/span><\/h3>\n
apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client -y<\/pre>\n
Depending on the MySQL version, you may be asked to set the MySQL root password.\u00a0 We will handle both scenarios in this tutorial.<\/p>\n
Step 4 \u2014 MySQL Root Password config<\/span><\/h3>\n
If you were asked for a root password at the previous step, you can skip this.<\/p>\n
Run the MySQL Secure to setup a root password and\u00a0 other settings.<\/p>\n
$ mysql_secure_installation<\/pre>\n
VALIDATE PASSWORD PLUGIN can be used to test passwords\r\nand improve security. It checks the strength of password\r\nand allows the users to set only those passwords which are\r\nsecure enough. Would you like to setup VALIDATE PASSWORD plugin?\r\n\r\nPress y|Y for Yes, any other key for No:<\/code><\/pre>\n
If you know how to chose a strong password, select No.<\/p>\n
Change the password for root ? ((Press y|Y for Yes, any other key for No) : y<\/pre>\n
Select Y and set your root password.<\/p>\n
Step 5 \u2014 Create the FreeRADIUS database schema\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
mysql -uroot -pPasswordForRootSql\r\nCREATE DATABASE radius;\r\nexit<\/pre>\n
Now that we have a database, let’s populate it with the radius schema.<\/p>\n
cd \/etc\/freeradius\/3.0\/mods-config\/sql\/main\/mysql\/\r\n \r\nmysql -uroot -pYourMysqlPass radius < schema.sql\r\nmysql -uroot -pYourMysqlpass radius < setup.sql<\/pre>\n
Step 6 \u2014 Set FreeRADIUS to use SQL<\/span><\/h3>\n
FreeRADIUS comes by default set to use files for users.<\/p>\n
cd \/etc\/freeradius\/3.0\/mods-enabled\r\nln -s ..\/mods-available\/sql sql\r\n<\/pre>\n
Open the “default” config file with your favorite text editor.<\/p>\n
cd \/etc\/freeradius\/3.0\/sites-available\/\r\nvim default<\/pre>\n
For all categories, remove the “file” directive and add the “sql” one. This will instruct FreeRADIUS to relly on the database for user management.<\/p>\n

Step 7 \u2014 Edit the radius SQL module’s config\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
Open the configuration file:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Modify the following values:<\/p>\n

Step 8 \u2014 Run FreeRADIUS\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
Being the first time firing up radius, better use the debug mode by adding “-X”<\/p>\n
freeradius -X<\/pre>\n
If everything is OK you should see something like this.<\/p>\n

Step 9 \u2014 GUI WebPanel\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Step 10 \u2014\u00a0 Create a NAS Client & User<\/span><\/h3>\n
For another computer to use our new radius server, it needs to be added in the nas\u00a0client table in the radius database.<\/p>\n
To add a Nas using Daloradius, go to\u00a0Managemnt > Nas > New Nas<\/strong><\/p>\n

To add an User\u00a0in DaloRadius, go to\u00a0Management > Users > New Users<\/strong><\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
There are plenty of attributes that can be set to users and users groups, but we will not get into that during this tutorial.<\/p>\n
Now that we have created a\u00a0Nas Client\u00a0<\/strong> and an\u00a0User,\u00a0<\/strong>we should test them. Everytime we add a new NAS ,<\/strong> we need to reload FreeRADIUS so that it fetches the refreshed table. Close and run radius again:<\/p>\n

Step 10 \u2014\u00a0Testing with NTRadPing<\/span><\/h3>\n
A very cool tool for testing radius servers is NTRadPing. You can download it here:\u00a0\u00a0ntradping.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
Add your radius server’s ip, change the port to 1812, insert your NAS<\/strong> secret and User<\/strong> credentials from the previous step.<\/p>\n

Clicking “Send” should reply a message.<\/p>\n
NTRadPing should display something like this when it succesfully validates an user against the radius server:<\/p>\n
