In case you’re running Ubuntu 18.04 ( or earlier versions as well, such as 16.04, 14.04 ), you may be encountering a locales<\/code> warning or error while trying to update your package index or installing a package.<\/p>\n

As the locales package configuration states:<\/p>\n

Locales are a framework to switch between multiple languages and allow users to use their language, country, characters, collation order, etc.<\/small>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The error looks something like this:<\/p>\n

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.\r\nperl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:\r\n\tLANGUAGE = (unset),\r\n\tLC_ALL = (unset),\r\n\tLC_MONETARY = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLC_ADDRESS = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLC_TELEPHONE = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLC_NAME = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLC_MEASUREMENT = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLC_IDENTIFICATION = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLC_NUMERIC = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLC_PAPER = \"de_DE.UTF-8\",\r\n\tLANG = \"en_US.UTF-8\"\r\n    are supported and installed on your system.\r\nperl: warning: Falling back to a fallback locale (\"en_US.UTF-8\").\r\nlocale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory<\/code><\/pre>\n
You may encounter this error very often on a fresh install of Ubuntu or Debian.<\/p>\n
One solution to fix this issue, first run the locale<\/code> command to list the locales currently defined for your user account. <\/p>\n
$ locale<\/code><\/pre>\n
The output will look something like this:<\/p>\n
LANG=en_US.UTF-8\r\nLANGUAGE=\r\nLC_CTYPE=\"de_DE.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_NUMERIC=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_TIME=\"de_DE.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_COLLATE=\"de_DE.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_MONETARY=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_MESSAGES=\"de_DE.UTF-8\"\r\nLC_PAPER=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_NAME=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_ADDRESS=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_TELEPHONE=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_MEASUREMENT=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_IDENTIFICATION=de_DE.UTF-8\r\nLC_ALL=<\/code><\/pre>\n
To generate the missing locale and reconfigure locales, identify the name of your locale ( in my case de_DE.UTF-8<\/code>), or use one another one that you prefer, such as en_US.UTF-8<\/code>.<\/p>\n
Then generate it using the following command:<\/p>\n
$ sudo locale-gen \"de_US.UTF-8\"<\/code><\/pre>\n
And you’ll get the output:<\/p>\n
Generating locales (this might take a while)...\r\n  de_DE.UTF-8... done\r\nGeneration complete.<\/code><\/pre>\n
After which, reconfigure locales using the following command:<\/p>\n
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales<\/code><\/pre>\n
And you’ll receive the output:<\/p>\n
Generating locales...\r\n  de_DE.UTF-8... up-to-date\r\nGeneration complete.<\/code><\/pre>\n
And now you shouldn’t receive any more errors!<\/p>\n
