The pidof Command<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the easiest commands to find the Process ID of a certain application is to use the \u201c<\/span><b>pidof<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d command. Let\u2019s go through some most used Kill commands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"1-the-kill-command\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. The Kill Command<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first and the most widely used command is the \u201cKill\u201d command. The syntax of the kill command is given as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre>kill {signal} {PID}<\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kill commands tell the OS to terminate the Processes referred by the PID by using the Signal specific. Some common Signals are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>-9<\/strong> Signal: To forcefully terminal a Process (Kill Signal)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>-15<\/strong> Signal: To terminate the Process (Allows the program to run the exit code and stop its processing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>-1<\/strong> Signal: To hang up the process<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>-17<\/strong>, <strong>-19<\/strong>, and <strong>-23 <\/strong>Signals: To stop the process (Stop Signal)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s kill Spotify&#8217;s PID(from the previous section) using the -15 signal. To do that, type the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre>kill -15 6847<\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rerun the \u201c<strong>pidof spotify<\/strong>\u201d command to ensure that the process has stopped its processing.
